Read Tony Kemp's blog on Apollo Property retrofitting programme for Crawley Borough Council
We’ve just started work on a retrofit programme for Crawley Borough Council. It’s a project funded through Technology Strategy Board’s national Retrofit for the Future competition and it involves us working on three very different properties as part of a pilot scheme to generate exemplars demonstrating how to reduce energy usage and cut waste at home.

Our three homes include a 1950s terrace, a 1960s semi and a 1990s semi-detached tenanted property. Working from designs by ECD Architects, it should take us about twelve weeks to install newly-insulated lofts; insulated entrance doors; micro-CHP replacement boilers; roof mounted photo-voltaic cells; LED replacement lighting and A++ rated appliances.
We’ll also be fitting new insulated dry lining, replacement triple glazing and whole house heat recovery ventilation in the 1950s property; external insulated render over cladding GF and a full retrofit programme of works in the 1990s house; and vacuum insulated panels with over cladding in the 1960s semi.
We’ve just completed the pre-construction phase that includes planning, finalising design and getting procurement in place and will be commencing construction works before too long. After we complete, Crawley/ ECD will test air tightness and run thermal imaging tests and provide information to the tenants on getting the best out of their new super efficient homes!
It’s going to be an exciting project and we look forward to seeing how much of an impact the eco improvements will have. Watch this space!
