About the Campaign

Why are we doing it?

Money is tight for everyone at the moment. But the planet is undergoing an even more pressing ‘ecological credit crunch’. It simply can’t sustain our current level of resource consumption – we’re living off our ecological overdraft!

Climate change will lead to increasingly unpredictable weather, more flash floods and more droughts in the summer. Globally, whole countries are literally disappearing under rising sea levels, competition for resources will lead to increasing migration and the habitats of many iconic animals, such as the polar bear, are being destroyed. But don’t despair! The fact that our homes are responsible for 27% of UK’s carbon emissions makes this a great place to start in reducing the production of greenhouse gases that lead to climate change.

To be fair to Government and other politicians, they have recognised we’ve got to tackle climate change and that our homes are on the front line. Government, supported by all three main parties, has set a target to reduce carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050.

It’s important we meet these targets, so the UK plays its part on the international stage. We can’t expect other countries to reduce their emissions if we don’t do so ourselves.

Now it’s about action, not words. We urgently need a plan of action to deliver on these targets. We need a nationwide programme of green refurbishment. But if people can’t afford the upfront cost of green refurbishment, we’re a bit stuck. And this is where the Grand Designs Great British Refurb comes in.
