Scorecard: Jobs

Labour

  • 400,000 new green jobs to be created by 2015, with 65,000 new jobs in the insulation and renewable energy sectors
In their manifesto, Labour say that they will create 400,000 new green jobs by 2015. They say that their Household Energy Management Strategy will have significant economic benefits and that rapid expansion of the home energy efficiency industry will create 65,000 new jobs by 2020 and potentially several times more down supply chains. No mention of measures to secure existing jobs.

This includes a particular focus on those seeking work: partnership with Groundwork UK to help the workless access job opportunities in the sector through training, education and apprenticeships.

Conservative

  • 70,000 skilled jobs but no timeline
The Conservatives estimate that their Green Deal home refurbishment finance scheme will lead to 70,000 skilled jobs being created in this sector although they do not indicate the time period over which these will be created and nothing is mentioned about existing jobs.

They will also ensure that 10% of the staff directly employed by providers of the "Green Deal" are apprentices.

Liberal Democrat

  • Green Stimulus plan will create 65,000 green jobs in the home refurbishment sector

Green Stimulus plan will create 65,000 green jobs in the home refurbishment sector. The time period of this is not yet clear.

Also, the Liberal Democrats will set up a work placement scheme to ensure that young people have the opportunity to gain skills and qualifications.

No mention of measures to secure existing jobs.

This multi-manifesto analysis explicitly does not recommend or endorse any one political housing policy over another. All the Great British Refurb campaign partners are politically neutral.

Here are our successes
kevin
quoteThe campaign was set up three years ago with the ultimate aim of making it easier for owners to eco-refurb their homes. And to a massive extent we achieved just that. The Green Deal, which is a government policy which will enables all of us to refurb our homes with no upfront costs is a game changer and we are proud to have been a catalyst and indeed on occasion cattle prod to that happening. So now when the landscape of home refurb is changing dramatically, it is time for us to take a back seat too and let the politicking end and the real world Great British Refurb commence. signature
