March 2011: Spring SuperHomes Opening

"Whether you live in a Victorian terrace, a converted mill or a 1960s semi, there are ways to cut your home's carbon emissions, reduce water use – and save money!" John Doggart – founder of the OldHome SuperHome network. Homeowners joined people up and down the country and opened their doors to the public between 27 March and 3 April 2011 as part of this year's Old Home SuperHome network's Spring Opening.
A SuperHome is simply an ordinary home that's made a few important refurbishments to improve insulation and energy (and water) efficiency – and in the process slashed a whopping 60% off their greenhouse gas emissions. In the last few years, public interest in eco-refurbishment has grown steadily.
At the SuperHome Open House event last September, more than 7,000 people visited - nearly double the number in 2009. This year even more people visited these innovative and exciting homes, to find ways to make their own homes warmer, comfier, cheaper to heat and better for the environment.

The GBR campaign ran from 2009 to 2012 and ended with the passing of the green deal legislation.
Here are our successes
The campaign was set up three years ago with the ultimate aim of making it easier for owners to eco-refurb their homes. And to a massive extent we achieved just that. The Green Deal, which is a government policy which will enables all of us to refurb our homes with no upfront costs is a game changer and we are proud to have been a catalyst and indeed on occasion cattle prod to that happening. So now when the landscape of home refurb is changing dramatically, it is time for us to take a back seat too and let the politicking end and the real world Great British Refurb commence.
