May 2011: Demand a Better Energy Bill

The Great British Refurb campaign has joined 29 other progressive organisations to support the call for a better Energy Bill.

We’ve been working hard since 2009 to make sure the Government (former and current) deliver an energy efficiency programme that is ambitious, affordable and attractive. Late last year when the Government introduced the Energy Bill to Parliament we were hopeful it would be improved on its journey through the Lords. Now it has reached the Commons and it’s nowhere near good enough.

It will become law by July this year and it needs improving before then. The Bill needs to be made better to make sure energy efficiency contributes enough to meeting the legal carbon-cutting targets in the Climate Act.  It does not at the moment. We’re working with Stop Climate Chaos and 29 other organisations like B&Q and M&S to support the Warm Homes Amendment. This will make sure the government delivers an energy efficiency programme that will cut carbon in line with the Climate Act targets whilst helping to tackle fuel poverty.

The GBR campaign ran from 2009 to 2012 and ended with the passing of the green deal legislation.

Here are our successes
kevin
quoteThe campaign was set up three years ago with the ultimate aim of making it easier for owners to eco-refurb their homes. And to a massive extent we achieved just that. The Green Deal, which is a government policy which will enables all of us to refurb our homes with no upfront costs is a game changer and we are proud to have been a catalyst and indeed on occasion cattle prod to that happening. So now when the landscape of home refurb is changing dramatically, it is time for us to take a back seat too and let the politicking end and the real world Great British Refurb commence. signature
