What eco-improvements did you make to your property?
Arriving back in England from three years in southern Germany was a bit of a shock to the system. The house we had decided to purchase seemed in mid-summer very warm especially the wonderful large conservatory. We soon found that there were several areas that needed our attention if we were not going to be heating the conservatory and garden in winter! Firstly we had frames built and doors fitted between the kitchen and conservatory and in the entrance hall - previously these areas were open plan. We then found that there was insufficient insulation in the loft space, especially around the dormer windows. We had been a bit uncertain of having two gas boilers providing hot water and central heating to different parts of the house so when British Gas came to check the them we were a bit surprised to have one of the boilers condemned. Our decision was to start from scratch and go for one pressurised system with two solar panels to help supply hot water. In an effort to be self sufficient we have installed a log burner to augment the central heating. We feel very strongly that our efforts are a drop in the ocean and would like to do more if possible. What positive and negative experiences did you have?
Crawling around in the loft around the dormer areas was definitely a negative experience. The temperature difference between the kitchen and conservatory has made us realise that we are saving a lot of energy by not having the radiators switched on in the conservatory. Watching the guage showing the temperature of the water flowing through the solar panels on a sunny day is a constant source of pleasure. We no longer have water tanks in the loft spaces. What are the benefits to your home and lifestyle?
A warmer house. No draughts. Peace of mind knowing the boiler has been fitted by experts and there is no risk of burst warter tanks.
What advice would you give to others considering similar improvements?
If you can afford it then every little helps.
